How many trees do you know that can be either male or female like the Marula in Africa?

This fact means that to the Venda people of the Great Rift Valley, the Marula tree is linked firmly to romance, love and fertility. For a son a woman will take bark infusions from the male tree and for a daughter from the female tree. If then a child of the opposite gender is born then the child is said to be very special as it is able to defy the sprits.

Like many African trees its history goes back thousands of years with Archaeological evidence showing the magical marula fruit to be a source of nutrition as long as ago as 10,000 years B.C.

The Marula is truly one of Africa' botanical treasures. Not only the fruit, but also the nut, are rich in minerals and vitamins and the oil is rich in antioxidants and oleic acid , essential components for the maintenance of healthy skin. The Zulu of Southern Africa have been crushing and boiling the seeds and extracting the oil to use as therapeutic message oil for hundreds of years.

Shea Butter is one of the best known of the ingredients that Africa has to offer. The fact that it melts at body temperature, that it is unusually high in essential fatty acids such as oleac, stearic, palmitic and linolenic acids all make it a firm favourite with the cosmetic cream industry.

Its name comes from the word s'í from the Bamana language of Mali and is grown across West Africa. Its production still comes from the traditional methods where the nut is cracked, crushed, roasted and then grinded in order to separate the oils. While the work can often be hard and gruelling some of the stages are also a social activity where the women can get together and share stories.

Aloe Vera is an incredible plant that has been widely used by skincare products because of its super soothing qualities that can hydrate all skin types. Its anti bacterial qualities mean it is even used in the treatment of wounds, burns and minor skin infections.
